We have repeatedly mentioned that almost all of Istria is covered with numerous sights that are really worth seeing and learning a little more about. These are actually various historical traces left to us by those who lived and worked there centuries ago, and more. We can certainly include these small towns, such as Motovun, as well as numerous churches and museums.
The Historical Museum of Istria is one of these landmarks. It is a museum whose activity is defined by legal provisions and acts as a single unit with four organizational units, such as the Department of History of the City of Pula, the Department of Medieval History of Istria, the Department of Istrian History of the New Century and the newly established Department of Naval and Naval Architecture.
In addition to the various departments, there are 14 collections, such as: Cultural and Historical Collection of City Life, Collection of Old Postcards and Photographs, Collection of Economic Development, Cultural and Historical Collection of Suburban Life, Collection of Medals, Uniforms and Military Equipment, Film and Video Collection , Collection of memoirs and soundtracks, Collection of notable personalities, Collection of old features and documents.
The Museum of History was established by the decision of the National Committee of the District of Pula on December 30, 1955 as the Museum of the National Liberation Struggle of Istria.
In 1966 it extended to the period of political and national awareness of the Croats and Slovenes of Istria and to the period from the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy to the attack of the Axis powers on Yugoslavia, and in 1969 to the period of June 1945 until the London Memorandum of 1954.
Today, the museum collects cultural assets in the period from the developed Middle Ages to the modern times. It processes, stores, protects and preserves it with the necessary documentation, and directly or indirectly presents it to the public through permanent and occasional exhibitions, or by publishing knowledge about museum material.
Through expert, scientific and other means of communication with the aim that movable goods, as goods of general national and human cultural heritage, serve primarily to satisfy basic human and cultural needs.
The museum is located in the fortress Kastel, known as the Venetian fortress in Pula, which in the 17th century A. de. He designed the villas as the central point of defense of the strategic and communication-commercial interests of the Venetian Republic.
